Quitting reddit

How I quit reddit

I’ve been a redditor for a few years now, and let me tell you, it has gradually consumed my life. It’s become such a reflex that whenever I pick up my phone, I instinctively open the Reddit app. And sometimes, I catch myself closing it only to reopen it moments later out of pure muscle memory. On my desktop, the search bar at the top seems to have a mind of its own, always suggesting “reddit.com” as if it knows my habits better than I do. I can’t even begin to count the number of hours I’ve spent on this site. According to Reddit itself, I’ve scrolled through approximately 155,000 “bananas” – more than anyone else I know.

That’s why I’ve made the decision to take a much-needed break from Reddit for an entire month. To ensure I don’t succumb to the overwhelming urge to log back in, I’ve taken some extreme measures:

  1. I changed my Reddit password to a string of random letters that I’ll never remember.

  2. I switched my recovery email address to one generated from a temporary email service like tempmail.org. Good luck trying to recover my account now!

  3. I went ahead and used futureme.org to send my Reddit password to myself in one month’s time. That way, there’s no way I can cheat my own system.

  4. Finally, I logged out of my Reddit account on all devices. It’s the only surefire way to keep myself locked out.

I know it may sound like I’m going a bit overboard here, but drastic times call for drastic measures. In my determination to break free from this addictive cycle, I’ve even gone ahead and blocked Reddit using UblockOrigin. Trust me, I’ve become all too familiar with the sight of this image, appearing like a broken record in my web browser: [insert the link to the image here].

hello

There was a time when I found it somewhat charming or cool to be addicted to Reddit, but now I realize how foolish and draining it actually is. The extent of the rabbit hole I’ve fallen into is truly alarming, and I’m itching to share my frustrations and insights about it. But that will have to wait for another blog post, because right now, my focus is on breaking free from this digital vice.
